The contents of the table below are from a document on the Samoset Council website. All parents in any unit should be asked to participate in as many training opportunities as possible. Leaders should include any available training dates as regular entries in their unit calendars! The following tips may be useful for leaders:
ANY adults participating in any events should be Youth Protection trained.
Every pack and troop should have at least 3 5 adults trained in Safe Swim Defense.
A troop should have at least 1 2 individuals who have completed the BSA Climb On Safely training.
Every troop should have at least 2 - 3 individuals trained in Safety Afloat.
Every troop should have at least 1 2 adults or youth with BSA Lifeguard certification.
Quality, certified training takes place at summer camp, at roundtable meetings, and at other designated times throughout the year. Since a specific training session is available locally only once or twice a year, it is essential that leaders communicate with the parents as to when and where such trainings will occur! Sometimes it may be more convenient to attend a training session scheduled in a different district.
Consult the BSA Guide to Safe Scouting for specific training policies regulating any water activities, climbing, shooting sports, aviation, and many other high adventure activities.
Finally, be sure to check out the BSAs national website called the Online Learning Center where some of the Fast Start and Youth Protection training is available online.
A specific set of training experiences has been designed for each Scouting leadership position. To find which courses you should take, find your position in the left column of the table below. If you change position in the future, (for example, if you are now a Cub Scout Den Leader and you become a Webelos Den Leader), you should refer to this chart to determine which new training you will need. You should plan to participate in Fast Start, New Leader Essentials, and Leader Specific Training for your position as soon as possible after you volunteer. You are also strongly encouraged to participate in supplemental training, and to consider advanced training when your experience warrants. |
